Mercury (Hg) is a global contaminant that can be harmful to the health of humans and wildlife. The Critical Zone, the area from the tree tops down to the bottom of cycling groundwater, is important for the sequestration of Hg, particularly forest soils. Rising pressures on natural resources and nationalistic policies are potential threats to global actions to limit Hg emissions and promotion of Hg sequestration in the Critical Zone.
