A Vote on Direct Democracy? Understanding the Results of the California Election

The stakes are high for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and for direct democracy

in California in Tuesday's election. What do the results bode for the

governor's strategy to make an end run around the legislature and go

directly to voters to take on his political opponents and achieve his goals?

Will the results affect his re-election campaign? Are voters tiring of

initiatives and referenda? Do they want the state government to figure out

how to govern and stop passing the buck to voters? Could this election

signal the beginning of a new turn in direct democracy, a trend in which

California has always led the nation?

For perspective on Tuesday's election,

join us for a discussion with a distinguished panel, including political

scientist David Brady, editorial writer Phil Yost, and invited political

leaders.
