As an assignment for Digital Photography II (ARTSTUDI 275), students were asked to collectively develop a theme for a group exhibition and to create artworks hinged on their creative and conceptual interpretations.

“The portrait-photograph is a closed field of forces. Four image-repertoires intersect here, oppose and distort each other. In front of the lens, I am at the same time: the one I think I am, the one I want others to think I am, the one the photographer thinks I am, and the one he makes use of to exhibit his art.” Roland Barthes

Representation of identity as a subject for photography is a layered concept, open to interpretations frequently rooted in cultural, political, and socio-economic circumstances. Portrait photography grapples with the challenge of distilling one's identity through images, leading to complicated questions about modes of representation and meaning. How to depict the duality of what is socially visible about someone’s identity versus what is not visible and at times hidden or unnoticed. How to convey what's internal, generally inconspicuous to others?

This exhibition features a diversity of creative perspectives communicating identity as intricate and multifaceted, often self-contradictory, unambiguous, and far beyond simple definition. Expanding on the possibilities of visual meaning, identity is invariably mediated through concrete objects, which are presented alongside the images to re-ground the abstracted self with the physical world.
