Current Trends and Future Prospects for Commercial Space Businesses in Asia
In this session, Prof. Dasher applies his US-ATMC approach to forecasting the impact of a new technology on industry value chains to examine the impact of outer space as a business platform on “the space economy” (space products and services, infrastructure and support services, R&D services, and financing/insurance) and on selected other industries, e.g. cloud IT, agriculture, and supply chain management. This session pays special attention to the emerging role of Asia in these sectors. In addition, the session will include information on companies that were not able to send speakers to this autumn quarter series on “The rise of commercial space businesses in Asia.”
Richard Dasher has directed the US-ATMC since 1994. He served concurrently as Executive Director of the Center for Integrated Systems (now the Stanford SystemX Alliance) from 1998 – 2015. Formerly a Consulting Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering (1994 – 2015), he is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. Richard was the first non-Japanese person ever to join the governance of a Japanese national university, serving on the Board of Directors of Tohoku University from 2004 and continuing on its Management Council through 2010. At present, he is on advisory boards for government research institutions, S&T funding programs, venture capital firms, startup companies, and accelerators in Japan, S. Korea, China, and Thailand, as well as in Silicon Valley. He earned the Ph.D. in Linguistics with a minor in Japanese language from Stanford and served as Director of the U.S. State Department advanced language and area training programs for U.S. diplomats assigned to Japan and Korea; he also developed new international business lines as a board director of two startup companies in Tokyo.
