The Stanford Shakespeare Company Presents: Romeo and Juliet
From forth the fatal loins of these two opposéd jazz clubs, the Stanford Shakespeare Company brings back to life this famous tale of star-crossed lovers. At the Blue Note Verona, Romeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight, only to learn that they are mortal enemies. Romeo, abandoning his buddies, jumps the Capulet wall to find Juliet on her balcony, where they exchange proclamations of love and decide to marry. With the help of Friar Laurence and the Nurse, they seal their young love despite their families’ ancient musical quarrel. While the Friar is hopeful that the young lovers’ bond might have the potential to quell their violent clashes, what follows next is a tale of disastrous miscommunication, a chorus of all too untimely deaths, and love -- unfaltering, transcendent love. A love that improvises, one not confined to a bar of sheet music or the keys on a piano. Join us for this contemporary spin on a classic story, featuring Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter...in double time.
The Stanford Shakespeare Company is Stanford's only repertory theatre group, dedicated to exploring the universal themes in Shakespeare through the visions of student artists and creating professional-quality Shakespeare plays for Stanford and the broader community.
