Department of Music

The Stanford Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble is dedicated to the performance, interpretation, and study of Afro-Latin music and its fusion with North American jazz. It is the ensemble’s belief that the evolution of “American music” is not indigenous to the United States but rather encompasses developments and influences from Latin and South America as well. Established in Winter 2008 by director Murray Low, the group has made rapid progress since its inception and is now one of the finest academic performing groups of its kind. John Santos, one of the foremost exponents of Afro-Latin music in the world today, will guest with the ensemble; he is a seven-time Grammy-nominated percussionist, US Artists Fontanals Fellow, and was 2013-14 SFJazz Resident Artistic Director.
