Words and Music: The Challenge and Mystery of Human Communication

Everywhere in our world forces of division are overwhelming the life of humanity. Social and technological innovations that once held the promise of fostering community are, with few exceptions, failing to bring people together on any but the most superficial levels. Just as in our time scientific discoveries in physics and biology may have catastrophically outpaced humanity's moral development, so the accelerating advances in the transmission of data seem to have obscured what it means for men and women actually to exchange and share thought and feeling. Something essential to our lives is no longer passing between us, and the longed-for goal of genuine human communication seems to recede farther and farther behind deceptive veils of "global interdependence." The entire meaning of human communication stands in urgent need of re-discovery. The aim of this workshop is to explore the power of philosophy and music to create among us a deepened sense of our shared life. We will work together with music to explore an ancient and eternally new possibility of human relationship.
