The Jane Austen Society of North America

The Jane Austen Society of North America, Northern California Region will meet Saturday, March 4, 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm, at Stanford University, in the Terrace Room of Margaret Jacks Hall. Dr Blakey Vermeule of the Stanford Department of English will speak on "What is the Matter with Miss Bates?". She will explore Austen's narrative innovations, and further development of techniques used by her predecessors, such as free indirect discourse. JASNA Nor Cal's own Margaret Horwitz will present "Ethics in the Novel Pride and Prejudice and Its Filmed Adaptations." She will focus primarily on the 1995 BBC adaptation, but will also refer to the 1940 and 2005 films, along with discussing ethical concepts in Austen's novel.
