Preserving Western History: An Illustrated Lecture

Dr. Andrew Gulliford, Professor of Southwest Studies and History at Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado, will discuss public history, which he defines as the history that happens outside a classroom. It is history for an out-of-school audience, and it involves teamwork with archaeologists, anthropologists, and exhibit curators. Public history includes walking tours, historic site interpretation, historic preservation, historic novels and films, archival administration, cultural resources management, and museum curation. His talk will reflect on the work of current public historians whose writings have purposely avoided describing “Western heritage,” because all too often “heritage” is perceived as the history that local communities would prefer to have described in contrast to the actual stories that need to be told.
