Zoot Suit by Luis Valdez

Watch Stanford students take the stage and perform the original play Zoot Suit by Luis Valdez. Directed by Stanford students Maricela Treviño and Micaela Díaz-Sánchez. Refreshments and Snacks available.

Following a 12 year tradition, Zoot Suit Week annually provides historical insights into the 1944 Sleepy Lagoon murder trial that brought national attention to the intolerance and injustices faced by young Mexican Americans of that era. Zoot Suit Week assembles over 700 people at events that provide an opportunity for the Stanford community to learn about the history and struggles of the Latino community through a variety of educational and cultural forums. Zoot Suit Week, which occurs in the month of February, includes a variety of workshops and events that both celebrate the dance and style of the era and examine the significance of the trial and the riots. Every year's programming includes a screening of Luis Valdez's film Zoot Suit, a workshop on the style of this era, an instructional workshop on swing and salsa dancing, a student-produced dramatic reading of Valdez's Zoot Suit, the ever popular Zoot Suit Dance featuring Dr. Loco's Rockin' Jalapeño Band, and a special guest speaker which in the past have included Luis Valdez, Danny Valdez, Alice McGrath, and other important people involved with the murder trial and/or the play. All events are free, open and publicized to the entire Stanford population.

This event is part of Zoot Suit Week 2006, presented by Casa Zapata, Stanford's Chicano/Latino Ethnic Theme Dorm.
