As the battles over same-sex marriage unfold, debates rage about the nature
and purposes of marriage, as well as about which institution--legislatures
or courts--should decide who may marry. Schacter will focus on some dilemmas that have attracted less attention. One is about the ethical dimensions of pursuing marriage equality, where major legal victories for some lesbian and gay people may encourage major legal losses for others. The other dilemma is about whether marriage belongs at the center of the struggle for sexual orientation equality.
