German Silent Film "The Eyes of the Mummy" screening with live accompanying music

As part of International Month, Bechtel International Center will be screening the German silent film “Eyes of the Mummy.” “Eyes of the Mummy” or "Die Augen der Mumie Ma", to give its original German title, was the first feature film for both director Ernst Lubitsch, and seductress star Pola Negri. Although often screened at Halloween in company of "Nosferatu" or "The Golem", it is not a horror film as we understand the concept. Such things had not been invented quite yet in 1918! It is rather a dramatic story with a strong touch of the exotic, the Gothic, and the supernatural. A wealthy young painter vacationing in Egypt hears a story about a mummy that can drive men mad. He investigates and finds not a mummy, but a girl (Pola Negri) held hostage by barbaric Egyptian man, Radu (Jannings). The painter frees the girl, and takes her back to Germany with him, where the erstwhile mummy, whose name is "Ma", becomes the toast of society. But, neither the painter nor Ma know that Radu is following them implacably in order to have his revenge! The climactic scene between Radu and Ma has become a recognized classic. The film was huge success in both Europe and America, where it paved the way for Lubitsch and Negri to move to Hollywood. This showing will be performed with live music by the Banu An-Nafs.
