Tango Concert by Tango no. 9

Who would imagine that at the turn of a new century, a charismatic, young San Francisco-based quartet named Tango No. 9 would garner a fervent cult following in Bay Area jazz clubs - based on their seductive interpretation of fifty-year old tango music?

The birth of Tango No. 9, back in 1998, came about in a wholly romantic way. Violinist Catharine Clune, a veteran of Club Foot Orchestra and Orchestra Nostalgico, conjured the notion in a dream and from the moment she woke that morning, she began to avidly research the life of Astor Piazzolla. From their work with early Piazzolla, which was documented with their critically acclaimed first release, all them cats in Recoleta, vintage Piazzolla, they became obsessed by early tango. Over the past four years, they have preformed from San Francisco to New Mexico, from milongas to venues such as the San Francisco Jazz Festival, playing modern tango and traditional, in collaboration with tango dancers, singers and jazz musicians.

Vibrant, voluptuous and touched with timelessness, the wryly-sophisticated quartet Tango No. 9 truly embraces the sensuous rhythms and tangents of the tango.

Please join us for a tango concert performed by Tango no. 9 as part of International Month at Bechtel International Center. It is sure to be a concert you do not want to miss.
