"Translating Drug Discoveries for Neglected Diseases of the Developing World"

Victoria G. Hale, PhD

Founder and CEO of One World Health

A Nonprofit Pharmaceutical Company

One World Health is the first nonprofit pharmaceutical company in the United States with a mission to develop safe, effective, and affordable new medicines for millions suffering from infectious diseases in the developing

world.

In it's 4th year as a nonprofit pharmaceutical company and medical research organization, OneWorld Health (OWH) has achieved a number of successes, both clinical and organizational, underscoring that a new model for drug

development is not only viable, but can thrive:

* With funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and partners UC Berkeley and Amyris Biotechnologies, OWH launched a $42.6 million program to use synthetic biology to develop a sustainable and affordable new source

of artemisinin-based antimalarials.

* Completion of the largest-ever Phase III clinical trial for visceral leishmaniasis, a lethal parasitic infection also known as Kala-azar, in association with hospitals catering to the poorest populations. Initial funding to enable a partner, Sanaria, Inc., to evolve the production

methods for a novel vaccine for malaria.

* OWH expanded its donor base to include contributions from philanthropic organizations such as the Chiron Foundation, Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation, Sapling Foundation, and hundreds of individuals from all over the globe.
