Jazz and the Music of Brazil: Celia Malheiros Band

Admired as both a performer and composer, Celia Malheiros has been a major player on the Bay Area music scene for years. A native of Rio de Janeiro, Malheiros has opened for the Grateful Dead, Carlos Santana, and the late Ray Charles; she has performed throughout the Bay Area and East Coast; served as music director at San Francisco's Carnaval Ball; and appeared at jazz festivals in San Jose, Monterey and San Francisco. Her 2002 debut CD, Sempre Crescendo, recorded in Rio de Janeiro and featuring master instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal, has been lauded by music critics and Brazilian music enthusiasts alike. Her new CD Cenario Brasileiro released in 2006, also recorded in Rio, features a great variety of Brazilian styles where Celia's compositions bring together a cast of incredible Brazilian artists, including composer/singer Joao Bosco.
