As part of the conference entitled Stressed-Out Students: Helping to Improve Health, School Engagement, and Academic Integrity conference, the public is invited to a free plenary session to hear current and incoming Stanford students, middle and high school students, as well as experts in the field discuss the topic of academic stress.
The panel speakers will include Marilee Jones, Dean of Admissions at MIT and national spokesperson on the changes in today's college admissions climate, speaking out against the pressures it induces in both students and parents. She is co-author of a book on the effects of stress of the college admissions process on the health of teenagers, to be published by the American Academy of Pediatrics in September 2006.
The panel will also include students from middle school, high school and Stanford University, and Dr. Denise Pope, author of Doing School: How we are creating a generation of stressed out, materialistic, and miseducated students. Stanford School of Education Dean Deborah Stipek will moderate the panel.
The conference is designed to address the growing concern that adolescents are often compromising their mental and physical health, personal values, and commitment to learning as they try to contend with the pressure for high achievement in U.S. schools. Saturday May 13th will include a full-day conference for a small number of middle school and high school teams from the Bay Area.
