Darfur Diaries feat. Adam Shapiro

In October, 2004 a team of three independent filmmakers including Adam Shapiro left for Darfur to create a film that allows the victims of atrocities to engage with the world, not just as victims, but as people with full lives, culture, and heritage. Thanks to the efforts of activists and organizers, we have learnt of the horrors of Darfurian suffering.

But have we understood the Darfur conflict?

Importantly, the film and speaker also probe the complicated history and background of Darfur that is often ignored by media outlets and activist groups. In a conflict that pits “Arabs” versus “Africans” or “blacks,” the underlying ethnic and socio-economic relations of the region are often obscured for simple labels. Join us for a film screening and discussion with one of the filmmakers - Adam Shapiro - as we explore the many layers of this tragic crisis and prospects for peace.
