Schroeder received his doctorate in Spanish from Stanford University in 2000. He is the author of Tomás Gutiérrez Alea: The Dialectics of a Filmmaker (New York: Routledge Press, 2002). Schroeder teaches Latin American film and literature at the University of Hawaii.
