2003 Jing Lyman Lecture Series: "Science at the Margins" -- Pamela Matson, Dean, School of Earth Sciences

"Science at the Margins." There has been an increasing need for interdisciplinary research and integrative approaches that call on knowledge and know-how from multiple disciplines. Professor Matson intends to engage the audience in a discussion of science at the margins of disciplines, and of the researchers who choose to be involved in interdisciplinary and integrative approaches to science and problem solving. Drawing on literature, her own experience, and the experience of the audience, she will address the factors that impede or support success in interdisciplinary studies, the importance of gender in such approaches, and the role of the university in supporting those involved in such research.
