TECH BRIEFINGS: Supporting PDAs at Stanford

PDAs at Stanford are a large and rapidly growing support challenge. Several types of handheld devices are widespread on campus and are becoming more and more integrated into the way many faculty, staff, and students get their work done. At the same time, the marketplace is rapidly changing and the technology itself is not yet mature, so support is and is likely to remain challenging for the foreseeable future.

Come to this Tech Briefing to learn about a new web site, http://pda.stanford.edu, created by IT Services to assist the support community with this effort. The goal is simple: to share what we have with the support community, and provide a venue for the support community to share what they have with each other and with us. On the site you'll find, for instance, a blog where we welcome your thoughts, your hard-won tips and tricks, your questions for all. As of now, there's just one blog that has been set up, and we'd like your input on how we should develop this.

There is also a link for Documents & Downloads. Like many of you, some of our staff have developed their own documentation for internal use. We've taken some of ours and made it available here. We invite you to share yours; for now, just put in a comment on the blog that you have something you'd like to make available, and we'll get in touch. We also strongly encourage you to try out and comment on the documents and other resources you find on the site.

Please let us know what you think of this site — both as a resource for you in your efforts to support PDAs in your groups, and as a type of community support effort that we might expand on.
