Studio Access: The Photographs of Leo Holub

Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Thursday 10:00 am-5:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday 1:00 pm-5:00 pm. Parking is free after 4:00 pm and all day on the weekends.

Over the course of a decade, Leo Holub, founder of the photography program in the Department of Art at Stanford University, traveled around New York, New Mexico, and California, taking photographs of more than one hundred artists. This extensive project was commissioned in the 1980s by Harry W. and Mary Margaret Anderson. His photographs range from formal poses to candid studio shots. The artists were able to control, in part, how they would be portrayed by offering their personal spaces in certain ways, while Holub's compositional solutions to these environments and their occupants are his own. The exhibition is organized into eight sections to highlight certain themes evident in the portfolio. Each rare glimpse into a living or studio space informs us about artists through their interaction with their surroundings and artwork.
