The Workcenter after Grotowski is a symposium with Mario Biagini, Associate Director of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards (Pontedera, Italy) dedicated to the legacy of the legendary director and to two decades of the Workcenter's practical research in performing arts known as “art as vehicle,” which includes work on ancient vibratory songs of African and Afro-Caribbean origin. The event will include a meeting with Mario Biagini, a question and answer session, and a rare screening of documentary films (filmed performances):
Downstairs Action (1989, dir. Mercedes Gregory)
Action (2000 by “Trois temps deux mouvements,” 2003 by “ACCAAN”)
Mario Biagini has been a central contributor to the practical research of the Workcenter since its founding in 1986. In 1997 and 1998, he assisted Jerzy Grotowski in the preparation of lectures and conferences for the Collège de France. Since 1990 Biagini has conducted research on theatrical and ritual traditions of India, with special concentration on the Hindu and Buddhist tantric lineages of Northern India. Associate Director of the Workcenter, Mario Biagini remains Thomas Richards' closest collaborator.
The Workcenter after Grotowski is free and open to the public and concludes a four-day closed work session led by Mr. Biagini. Mr. Biagini's visit to Stanford is part of the Workcenter's first official engagement in the United States.
Sponsored by the Stanford University President's Fund and the Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts.
