Fire in the Monastery Library & Other Himalayan Tales: Making Sense of the Tabo Manuscripts

Paul Harrison, Acting Professor of Religious Studies, Stanford University

This talk will introduce the project to catalogue the manuscript collection of the Tibetan monastery of Tabo in the Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India, and address several historical problems relating to it. The presentation will be illustrated with slides taken during field work at the monastery and images of the art and iconography of the region, the cradle of the Tibetan Buddhist renaissance in the 10th & 11th centuries.

Paul Harrison was Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. He specializes in the study of Buddhism, and his research interests include the history and canonical literature of Buddhism in Sanskrit, Chinese and Tibetan and the study of Buddhist manuscripts.
