Ethics @ Noon: Byron Bland (Law School) on The Crisis of Belonging: The Meaning and Ethics of Social Cohesion

Ethics at Noon is a weekly lecture series that draws professors from various departments to talk about the ethical components of their research. This week our speaker is Byron Bland from the Stanford law school.

"In his recent book, Murder in Amsterdam, Ian Buruma describes the crisis of tolerance facing Dutch society in the aftermath of the murder of filmmaker Theo Van Gogh. The encounter between militant Islam and secular Europe has posed fundamental questions about the future of social and political integration and the viability of multiculturalism. The recent controversial statement by Pope Benedict XVI and the various reactions of Muslims across the world has resulted in increased calls for dialogue and exchange. But, what should this dialogue be about? Are there limits to what can be discussed and debated? What does it mean to belong and along what lines might a constructive dialogue proceed?"
