"Radical Harmonies" (2002, directed by Dee Mosbacher)
This award-winning documentary examines the forgotten history of the Women's
Music Cultural Movement. Though in the early 21st century, feminist
musicians have crossed over to mainstream success (Ani DiFranco, Sheryl
Crow, and Alanis Morrissette, for example), the foremothers of these famous
femmes had to contend with much sexism and resistance. Starting with 1970s
female artists, producers, engineers, and technicians that paved the way
for a bustling women's music tradition, this film includes interviews with
Cris Williamson, Linda Tillery, Mary Watkins, Ani DiFranco, and Melissa
Ferrick.
This film series is a component of Introduction to Feminist Studies (FEMST
101/HIST 107), taught by Professor Estelle Freedman, which examines how
gender inequality is created and perpetuated, and how feminist theory and
movements respond to gender inequality. Films are open to the public and
all members of the Stanford community.
