"Water," film screening and discussion

Married to an older man whom she barely knows and with whom she never lives,

Chuyia is widowed before she reaches her teens. She is immediately taken to

a "widow's home", shunned by the rest of the community.

Join us as we watch Deepa Mehta's "Water", a controversial film that

considers the treatment of widows in India and examines the societal

expectations for Indian women in general. The screening will be followed

by a faciliated conversation with Huma Dar, a Ph.D. candidate from the

University of California, Berkeley.
