It’s a privilege to present the results of the 10th annual undergraduate juried competition at the Stanford Art Gallery. This exhibition celebrates the creativity and breadth of artistic exploration by highlighting some of the best undergraduate artwork on campus. We hope that you take a moment to reflect on the diversity of art on display, including video, installation, collage, photography, painting, and sculpture. We invite you to share our delight in the various ways in which the artists on display choose to frame the world. Whether it’s with humor, a sense of awe, or simply the juxtaposition of traditional forms and material, they interrogate the systems and the constraints visible to them and rejoice in reclaiming and redefining the environment that surrounds them.
I would like to thank this year’s jury, including Aleesa Alexander, Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and Co-Director, Asian American Art Initiative at the Cantor Arts Center, and Gabriel Harrison, Associate Director and Curator, Galleries & Exhibitions in the Department of Art and Art History. In addition, I would like to express my appreciation to Daniel Brickman, the Art Department’s Museum Preparator, and Julianne Garcia, Events & Communications Manager, for their generous contributions to this exhibition. Please engage these works both critically and appreciatively. They set a tone of inclusivity and celebration and remind us that art is above all, an act of intellectual and creative exploration.
