Stanford Department of Art & Art History presents the 2022 Senior Undergraduate Exhibition, Nowhere Fast, featuring works by graduating seniors of art practice. Curated by Jonathan Calm.
—
Nowhere Fast, our first in-person Senior Show in three years, marks a celebratory, mindfully tentative return to the tangible reality of artistic expression and exhibition on the part of an exceptional group of students.
It is impossible to tell exactly how the pandemic has affected the bodies of work on display in the show, as well as our experience of the world moving forward, until we have the historical benefit of further hindsight. Certain is that these Seniors have made the most of an arduous, transformative period by enduring its hardships and meeting its challenges to rise to the occasion of this exhibit.
The work created by them offers a meaningful temporal perspective by emphasizing the importance of gradual, deliberate progress and process over society’s all-too-pervasive cultivation of speed. They understand that art is not a race toward instant effect or fast success, but a lifelong arc of exploration toward ever greater integrity and insight.
On behalf of all faculty, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to our Seniors, not just for their achievement of putting a beautiful show together, but especially for their collaborative spirit of solidarity with and generosity toward one another, which it has been my privilege to share.
Based on such an empowering capstone exhibit, these young artists are definitely going somewhere, and I am proud of them for taking the time to chart their path and make their mark.
