Event Details:
The Department of Art & Art History presents "&" the 2024 First-Year MFA Exhibition, on view February 13 through March 15* at the Coulter Art Gallery. Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, February 22, 4-6pm. This exhibition is curated by Jonathan Calm and features works by Damon Casarez, Elina Frumerman, Emily Harter, Andrew Sungtaek, and Cooper Salmon. *Gallery is closed on Presidents Day - Monday, Feb. 19
The five dedicated first-year MFA's whose work is on display in this exhibit share a preoccupation with the establishment of identity through familiarity. From very different backgrounds, they explore perceptions of what it means to be part of a family, a society or a culture. They recontextualize objects and rituals that make us consider and question the roles we play in the narratives we create for ourselves.
Each of these artists delves into a world of memory and reshapes the past as a vision of the present that is in no way derivative, but rather richly original and revelatory. Through their artistry, they demonstrate the power of painting, photography and sculpture to transform deeply personal fragments of experience into a fascinating template of shared humanity across generations.
