  by Josyln Rose + Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi. We’ll ask them what documentary 
 film should learn from feature film and vice versa? How does cinematic str
 ucture inform a documentary filmmaker’s story-telling processes? \n\n—
 \n\nChinaka Hodge is a poet\, playwright\, and screenwriter. She attended 
 USC's School of Cinematic Arts MFA in the Writing Division with a focus in
  Augmented Reality/ARG. She has appeared on two seasons of HBO’s Def Poe
 try and is a Kennedy Center Next50 recipient. Chinaka's screenwriting cred
 its include RISE\, SNOWPIERCER (HBO/MAX) \, AMAZING STORIES (APPLE+)\, and
  THE MIDNIGHT CLUB (NETFLIX). Chinaka is Head Writer/Executive Producer of
  Disney+ / MARVEL’s series IRONHEART\, which focuses on the adventures o
 f black girl tech genius\, Riri Williams. Chinaka is also a mom to a brill
 iant 4 year old.\n\nJoslyn Rose is an Emmy®-nominated director\, award-wi
 nning filmmaker\, producer\, and writer working across both narrative and 
 non-fiction storytelling with films featured on Showtime\, Paramount\, War
 ner Bros. Entertainment\, Starz\, and Lionsgate. Her projects have premier
 ed at festivals including Sundance London\, Essence Fest\, and Urbanworld.
  She was named a finalist for the Academy Gold Women's Fellowship under th
 e Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Joslyn's feature-length stu
 dio directorial debut\, Stand (Showtime/Paramount+)\, explores the extraor
 dinary journey of activist and basketball prodigy Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. The 
 film features Steph Curry\, Mahershala Ali\, Ice Cube\, and others\, and w
 as nominated for a Sports Emmy® Award for Outstanding Feature Length Docu
 mentary.\n\nEli Jacobs-Fantauzzi is an internationally-recognized and awar
 d-winning filmmaker. He is the founder of FistUpTv\, a non-extractive medi
 a platform uplifting and telling stories from underrepresented communities
  worldwide. His work has circulated through National Broadcast: Free Speec
 h TV\, Teaching Channel\, and PBS. Online he has created content for remez
 cla\, okayafrica\, TIDAL\, and VIBE. Known for the award-winning documenta
 ries\, We Still Here / Nos Tenemos and Bakosó Afrobeats of Cuba\, Eli is 
 currently curating his 17th Annual Fist Up Film Festival. His dedication t
 o his craft is deeply connected to his commitment to social justice and th
 e belief in the transformative power of storytelling.\n\n—\n\nHella Cine
 matic: The Radical Impact of the Bay Area on Film is presented by IDA\, th
 e Institute for Diversity in the Arts.\n\nThis winter\, join celebrated po
 et\, screenwriter\, and show-runner Chinaka Hodge (Marvel’s Ironheart\, 
 Snowpiercer\, and The Midnight Club) for a generative writing course roote
 d in community. In this course\, we will examine The Bay Area’s radical 
 influence on Modern American Cinema from the standpoint of both creator an
 d critic. Students can expect to learn the fundamentals of traditional thr
 ee act structure\, gain a comprehensive knowledge of industry workings\, a
 nd investigate a wide swath of genre and approach. Work from directors and
  composers from Northern California or with films set in the area will be 
 the core of our syllabus\, with special attention given to Ryan Coogler\, 
 Nijla Mumin\, Boots Riley\, Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi\, Joslyn Rose Lyons\, and
  Barry Jenkins. We will look at forms in feature film\, musical variety\, 
 hour long and half hour TV\, original soundtracks and scores.
