FDI, trade, and supply chains are changing in China because of COVID and an increasingly tense international environment. APARC's China Program is privileged to host the heads of the European and US Chambers of Commerce in China, Jöerg Wuttke and Michael Hart, to discuss trade, investment, and operational realities on the ground for foreign companies.

We will cover such topics as whether and how foreign companies have changed their views on China in recent years, and if their shifting views caused them to change behaviors. What have been the consequences of China's COVID policies on the operations of foreign companies? What is the actual situation concerning "de-coupling" in the supply chain space? We will also identify and discuss key trends likely to occur in China's business relationship with foreign companies in the near term.

Speakers

Jörg Wuttke is President of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, an office he held from 2007 to 2010, 2014 to 2017, and again since May 2019. From 2001 to 2004, Mr. Wuttke was the Chairman of the German Chamber of Commerce in China. Since its establishment in 2013, Mr. Wuttke has been a member of the Advisory Board of Germany’s foremost Think Tank on China, Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), in Berlin. From 2013 to 2016, and since 2019, Mr. Wuttke is the Vice Chairman of the CPCIF International Cooperation Committee, a group representing Multinational Companies in China’s Chemical Association. He has lived in China for more than 30 years.

Michael Hart is President of the American Chamber of Commerce in China, based in Beijing. He has more than 25 years of business experience in Asia, including 19 years in mainland China. As President, Michael oversees all advocacy, programs, partnerships, and insights provided by the Chamber to support the business growth of around 900 foreign corporations operating in China. Prior to joining AmCham China, Michael spent most of his career in commercial real estate in Taipei, Shanghai, and Tianjin, including almost 20 years for a NYSE-listed property services firm. Michael holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration with a focus on finance and banking from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is a fluent speaker of Mandarin Chinese.

Jean C. Oi is a William Haas Professor of Chinese Politics in the department of political science and a Senior Fellow of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. She is the founding director of the Stanford China Program at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center. Professor Oi is also the founding Lee Shau Kee Director of the Stanford Center at Peking University.
