Event Details:

Join us for an artist talk with Sofía Gallisá Muriente in conjunction with the exhibition Celaje (Cloudscape), on view at the Cantor Arts Center from December 6, 2023 through May 19, 2024. Celaje (Cloudscape) is a 41-minute video by Sofía Gallisá Muriente that explores the connection between recent natural disasters and Puerto Rico’s colonial history. It incorporates home movies, recordings of the artist’s grandmother, and post-disaster footage, serving as an elegy for impermanence and the impact of the tropical climate on historical records. In this talk, Sofía Gallisá Muriente will guide us through the themes and creative process that underpin Celaje (Cloudscape). She will offer insights into the materiality and creative experimentation embedded in her work.

Sofía Gallisá Muriente is a Puerto Rican artist whose practice claims the freedom of historical agency, proposing mechanisms for remembering and reimagining. She employs text, image and archive as medium and subject, exploring their poetic and political implications. She has been a fellow of the Cisneros Institute at MoMA, Smithsonian Institute, Puerto Rican Arts Initiative and the Flaherty Seminar, and a resident artist at the Vieques Historical Archive, Alice Yard, FAARA and Amant. Her work has been shown recently in Documenta Fifteen, MoMA, the Whitney Museum, Savvy Contemporary, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico, and galleries El Kilómetro and Embajada. From 2014 to 2020, she co-directed the artist-run organization Beta-Local in San Juan. In 2023, she was awarded the Latinx Artist Fellowship and published the artist book Observatorio de lagunas: notas de campo with Editorial Educación Emergente.
