Join the Institute for Diversity in the Arts as we welcome interdisciplinary artist, Helina Metaferia for an interactive artist talk on assemblage, collage, and the use of personal and institutional archives as source material. This talk is in concert with the artist’s solo show at the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD), What We Carry to Set Ourselves Free, on view in San Francisco from October 2, 2024 — March 2, 2025. Metaferia will also have two works on view at the Harmony House at Stanford during this time.

What We Carry to Set Ourselves Free, is a research-based project and is an extension of the artist's ongoing By Way of Revolution series. The series foregrounds the often-overlooked labor of BIPOC women and gender-marginalized people within activist histories and their continued contributions within today's social justice movements.

Helina Metaferia is an interdisciplinary artist working across collage, assemblage, video, performance, and social engagement. Metaferia received her MFA from Tufts University’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She’s held solo exhibitions at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; RISD Art Museum, Providence, RI; and Museum of African Diaspora, San Francisco, CA. Her work was included in the 2023 Sharjah Biennial, United Arab Emirates. Metaferia is an Assistant Professor at Brown University in the Visual Art department, and lives and works in New York City.
