DESCRIPTION:Talk description:\n\nThis paper offers a close reading of conte
 mporary artist Young Joon Kwak's sculptural series\, Spartan Ruin. By juxt
 aposing Kwak's sculptural "skins" with ancient visual and verbal discourse
 s on figuration and the athletic body\, I propose that the work invites us
  to reorient our senses away from the forms of classicism that we've been 
 trained to see and instead towards the layered kinesthetic histories of sp
 orting bodies that Kwak's work invites us to feel.\n\nShort Bio:\n\nAva Sh
 irazi is an assistant professor of Classics at Haverford College and a fac
 ulty fellow in Visual Culture\, Arts and Media. She is also a founding dir
 ector of the::sense::archive\, a research network and creative collective 
 that fosters collaborations between researchers and artists who share the 
 fields of sensory studies and aesthetics.\n\nShe earned her PhD in Classic
 s from Stanford in 2017.\n\nThis talk will not be recorded and will not be
