Event Details:
In celebration of Asian American & Pasifika Heritage Month, the Centers for Equity, Community, and Leadership are bringing local facilitator Dr. Nikkia Young back to campus for a second workshop on building authentic solidarity and allyship across Asian and Black communities. This program is designed for students and staff needing practical support to negotiate the complex racial dynamics resulting from how Black and Asian communities have been historically (and still are!) pitted against one another as a strategy for upholding racial oppression. In this interactive workshop, after a quick review of common dynamics and models for understanding them, we’ll use visuals, storytelling, and open discussion to work into the “how” of cross-racial solidarity—including addressing:
- What can cross-racial solidarity look, sound, and feel like in real life?
- How can we tell the difference between authentic solidarity and unreliable allyship?
- How can we better anticipate the dynamics (good and bad!) that will come up with our potential allies?
- What do we need to understand and be able to do to be better allies?
There will be time for conversation, so don’t forget to bring your thoughts, questions and an open heart!
