Event Details:
Hosted by the Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE) Stanford Food Institute, this educational seminar explores the delicious recipes and rich history of modern soul food, rooted in the Great Migration.
Chef Tanya Holland is a celebrity chef, author, restaurateur, and food systems changemaker. This program will feature a conversation–moderated by Chef Alice Pyo, CPK, Flavor Lab Research & Special Projects Sous Chef–and an engaging audience discussion to learn about the rich history of African American migration that brought Tanya’s own family from the Deep South to the West Coast. This educational seminar will bring to life her newest cookbook: Tanya Holland’s California Soul: Recipes from a Culinary Journey West. The conversation will also delve into Tanya’s experience working in the restaurant industry, her vision for advancing racial equity and climate action through food, the important work she’s leading across the globe, and her new role as Senior Advisor for the R&DE Stanford Food Institute.
Join us in welcoming her back to Stanford, where for many years she has advised R&DE Stanford Dining’s culinary team and delighted our students with the delicious foods in her Red Skillet Kitchen concept in Lakeside Dining. Food enjoyed throughout the evening will feature recipes from Tanya’s new book, which marries Black Southern cultural inspirations with local, sustainable, chef-driven, seasonal ingredients.
