12th Annual Free and Virtual Contemplation By Design Summit

Event Details:

Peace in Schools Mindful Studies is a research-backed, for-credit, semester-long high school course, taught to over 6,500 teens since 2014. The contemplative depth and focus on adolescence sets Peace in Schools apart from other mindfulness in education offerings. In this guided practice with Peace in Schools' Executive Director, Janice Martellucci, you’ll experience time-tested exercises straight from the classroom. Grounded in trauma-informed, equity-centered, contemplative practices, the Mindful Studies curriculum invites students to explore core concepts such as self-talk, emotional regulation, and inherent wholeness. The Peace in Schools approach centers relational, long-term instruction delivered by deeply trained facilitators who embody the mindfulness they teach.

This guided practice is one session of two taught by Janice Martelluci during the Contemplation by Design Summit. You are welocme to attend one or both sessions. The other session is a lecture taught with Caverly Morgan also on Saturday, October 18 and is titled Peace with Youth Starts with Us: Insights from Implementing an Inner Curriculum in High Schools.

Janice Martellucci is the Executive Director of the non-profit Peace in Schools, based in Portland, Oregon. For over a decade she has been an innovative leader in the field of mindfulness in education, playing an integral role in designing and implementing the nation’s first, for-credit, semester-long mindfulness course in public high schools. Her contemplative roots started with her upbringing and deepened during her years studying in retreat settings and training intensively with Caverly Morgan. Janice has led Peace in Schools through an important phase of growth, including developing an in-depth train-the-trainer model, expanding into California, and collaborating with other leaders in the field. Under her leadership, Peace in Schools is rolling out a major initiative to bring transformative mindfulness education to teens and educators in new regions across the country.

This session is part of the FREE Contemplation by Design Summit, Oct. 15-27, 2025.
