DESCRIPTION:Abstract: There is growing interest in seaweed cultivation as a
 n environmentally regenerative form of aquaculture\, a source of biofuels\
 , low-carbon food and animal feed\, and a potential strategy for carbon se
 questration. To help address questions about the expansion of seaweed cult
 ivation we have developed a dynamical model\, the MacroAlgae Cultivation M
 ODeling System (MACMODS)\, to investigate farm-scale design and siting\, e
 nvironmental feedbacks\, as well as global-scale seaweed production potent
 ial. At the regional scale\, MACMODS integrates a regional ocean model (RO
 MS) with a fine-scale large eddy simulation (LES) model that resolves with
 in-farm canopy transport and turbulent mixing and a macroalgal growth mode
 l that accounts for hydrodynamically-mediated biological processes like th
 e enhancement of nutrient uptake due to flow and waves. We demonstrate the
  utility of this framework for cultivation of giant kelp\, Macrocystis pyr
 ifera\, along the California coast. At the global level\, we use MACMODS a
 longside a technoeconomic model to address the potential productivity\, co
 sts\, and potential climate benefits of seaweed farming.\n\nBio: Dr. Krist
 en Davis\, is an Associate Professor of Oceans at Stanford University and 
 has over 20 years of experience in studying ocean and coastal circulation 
 in various locations including the US East and West Coasts\, Gulf of Mexic
 o\, Caribbean Sea\, Red Sea\, and South China Sea. Dr. Davis has experienc
 e in both field observations and numerical tools to learn more about physi
 cal processes in the ocean and their influence on marine ecosystems. Suppo
 rted by ONR\, NSF\, DOE and other funding sources\, Dr. Davis’s current 
 research includes nonlinear internal wave dynamics\, coral reef hydrodynam
 ics\, estuarine circulation\, and seaweed aquaculture.
