Event Details:

This program, organized by CREEES and the Department of Art & Art History, and supported by Stanford Global Studies, brings to campus some of the most interesting and accomplished contemporary filmmakers from Serbia: Jelena Maksimović, Ognjen Glavonić, and Marko Grba Singh. Three films will be screened in the course of two days, accompanied by conversations with their authors. The program will give the audience a solid introduction to both the dramatic narrative and the documentary approaches to filmmaking, by three cineastes invested in critically exploring the socio-political, historical, and personal dimensions of the idea of “homeland."

First Screening:

Thursday, October 13, 2022 at 5:30pm PT at Oshman Hall, McMurtry Art Building

Homelands (dir. Jelena Maksimović, 2020) followed by Q&A with the filmmaker

A girl born in the former Yugoslavia returns to a mountain village her grandmother fled during the Greek Civil War. The place has become a trendy ski resort and no longer corresponds to her family memories.

Second Screening:

Friday, October 14, 2022 at 12:00pm PT at Oshman Hall, McMurtry Art Building

Rampart (dir. Marko Grba-Singh, 2021) followed by Q&A with the filmmaker

Marko spends time in the abandoned apartment of his childhood in Belgrade. Traces of the past are being drawn and memories, both idyllic and traumatic, are combined. The family VHS archive shows his universe during 1998 and 1999: gatherings, pets, videogames, and moments of great uncertainty reveal a common life embraced by a historical event.
