Event Details:

Please join the Comics: More Than Words Research Group talk entitled "El Dorado Dystopias" by Javiera Irribarren (Sarah Lawrence College).

We will be hosting Javiera Irribarren on Zoom who will be discussing Chilean comics and their relationship to environmentalism. The selection includes Witranantu and El último detective. In this event, Javiera will explore the comic as a hybrid genre and the worldbuilding that the authors create. She will focus on the connection between the action genre, postdevelopment, and Indigenous representation. The reading selection is in Spanish, so please focus your attention on the action sequences and how the backgrounds contribute to worldbuilding.

Javiera Irribarren holds a PhD in Latin American and Iberian Cultures from Columbia University. She is currently a Guest Faculty member in the Department of Language and Literature at Sarah Lawrence College. Her work focuses on contemporary Latin American culture, with an emphasis on comics, film, and transmedia storytelling. Her research and teaching interests include Spanish-language pedagogy, visual culture, critical race theory, and environmental humanities.

The event will be on Zoom and will take place on October 29th at 12 PM PST. In preparation for the talk and the subsequent discussion, please read the visual novel selection.
