ADHD in Preschool Age Children: What Pediatricians Need to Know

SPEAKER
Yair Bannett, MD, MS
Assistant Professor, Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics
Stanford School of Medicine

SESSION DESCRIPTION
This session will review the current evidence regarding attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with a specific focus on preschool-age children. We will discuss how to avoid over- and under-diagnosis of ADHD in young children, when to offer evidence-based treatments, and what are the short-term and long-term benefits of treatment. We will highlight gaps and disparities in quality-of-care provided by pediatricians, and outline how, with AI support, we can improve care and outcomes for young children with ADHD and their families. We will also provide information on how to refer preschool-age children with ADHD to a new clinical trial of medication treatment at Stanford DBP.

EDUCATION GOALS

  • Describe the current scientific evidence on ADHD throughout the life course, including the importance of early identification, effective treatments, and long-term outcomes.
  • Recognize gaps and disparities in quality-of-care provided by pediatricians to preschoolers with ADHD.
  • Consider efforts to close evidence and quality gaps, including a new clinical trial and AI-powered strategies, to improve care and outcomes for young children with ADHD.
