DESCRIPTION:Eric Goldman\, a professor of law at Santa Clara University Sch
ool of Law\, and Jim Steyer\, founder and CEO of Common Sense Media\, disc
uss the pros and cons of the TAKE IT DOWN Act. \n\nDeep disagreement perva
des our democracy\, from arguments over immigration\, gun control\, aborti
on\, and the Middle East crisis\, to the function of elite higher educatio
n and the value of free speech itself. Loud voices drown out discussion. O
pen-mindedness and humility seem in short supply among politicians and cit
izens alike. Yet constructive disagreement is an essential feature of a de
mocratic society. This class explores and models respectful civic disagree
ment. Each week features scholars who disagree — sometimes quite strongl
y — about major policy issues. Each class will be focused on a different
topic and have guest speakers. Students will have the opportunity to prob
e those disagreements\, to understand why they persist even in the light o
f shared evidence\, and to improve their own understanding of the facts an
d values that underlie them.\n\nThis course is offered in the spirit of th
e observation by Hanna Holborn Gray\, former president of the University o
f Chicago\, that “education should not be intended to make people comfor
table\, it is meant to make them think. Universities should be expected to
provide the conditions within which hard thought\, and therefore strong d
isagreement\, independent judgment\, and the questioning of stubborn assum
ptions\, can flourish in an environment of the greatest freedom.”\n\nThe
speakers in this course are the guests of the faculty and students alike
and should be treated as such. They are aware that their views will be sub
ject to criticism in a manner consistent with our commitment to respectful
critical discourse. We will provide as much room for students’ question
s and comments as is possible for a class of several hundred. For anyone w
ho feels motivated to engage in a protest against particular speakers\, th
ere are spaces outside the classroom for doing so.\n\nWhen/Where?: Tuesday
s 3:00-4:50PM in Cemex Auditorium\n\nWho?: This class will be open to stud
ents\, faculty and staff to attend and will also be recorded.\n\n1/6 Admin
