Drew Endy is an associate professor of bioengineering at Stanford University and a pioneer of synthetic biology. His interdisciplinary work at Stanford includes roles at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (the d.school), the Hoover Institution, and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, where he helps leaders understand biology as a strategic domain.
A co-founder of the BioBricks Foundation, Endy helped launch the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition to democratize biotechnology for student innovators worldwide. He helped establish new bioengineering majors at MIT and Stanford and has brought his expertise to the World Health Organization, the Defense Science Board, and the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity. President Obama recognized him for his work in 2013, and Esquire named him one of the 75 most influential people of the 21st century.
Endy holds a PhD from Dartmouth College and degrees in environmental engineering from Lehigh University. He is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
