DESCRIPTION:The Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment hosted a semin
 ar with L. Ruby Leung\, a climate scientist at the Pacific Northwest Natio
 nal Laboratory.\n\nAs the atmosphere warms\, it can hold more water vapor.
  But climate models consistently project that land surfaces will actually 
 become drier\, with serious consequences for heatwaves\, droughts\, and wi
 ldfires.\n\nL. Ruby Leung\, a Battelle Fellow at Pacific Northwest Nationa
 l Laboratory and chief scientist of the Department of Energy's Energy Exas
 cale Earth System Model\, explored what's driving this trend. She examined
  the role of soil moisture in land drying and present a framework for reco
 nciling conflicting humidity data across observations\, models\, and histo
 rical records. She'll also discuss what increased land aridity means for f
 lash droughts and wildfires\, and why projecting future extremes remains a
  scientific challenge.\n\nLeung is an elected member of the National Acade
 my of Engineering and a fellow of the American Meteorological Society\, AA
 AS\, and American Geophysical Union. Her work spans Earth system modeling\
 , the water cycle\, and high-impact weather events.\n\nThis is the first o
 f a new speaker series\, Climate Horizons\, which will bring leading clima
 te scholars to Stanford to present frontier research and engage with the c
 ampus community.  Co-sponsored by the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainabil
 ity and the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment\, the series will
  include seminars and presentations as well as discussions and informal me
 etings designed to foster interdisciplinary exchange and strengthen connec
 tions across climate-related fields at Stanford.\n\nMore information will
