DESCRIPTION:Electrochemical energy storage devices such as batteries will p
lay a dominant role in electrification of transportation and clean electri
city from renewables for reaching the ambitious goal of carbon neutrality
by 2050. Li-ion batteries (LIBs)\, the current dominant technology\, is fa
cing an increasing pressure on maintaining a stable supply-chain and their
dependence on critical materials such as Li\, Co\, Ni and graphite\, and
their associated socio-environmental impacts. Furthermore\, LIBs are not o
ptimal from both cost and scalability perspective for long duration energy
storage (LDES) that demands resilient storage systems longer than 10 hour
 s. This talk will provide a high-level overview and summary of current hig
h energy density battery chemistries for transportation and grid-scale ene
rgy storage and research efforts to develop alternate battery materials fr
om earth abundant elements. \n\nBio\n\nDr. Jagjit Nanda is a Distinguished
Scientist and Executive Director of the joint SLAC-Stanford Battery Resea
rch Center. He is an adjunct professor in Materials Science and Engineerin
g Department\, Stanford University and Scholar at the Precourt Energy Inst
itute\, Stanford University. Dr. Nanda is an international leader on batte
ry and energy storage materials and systems and previously worked at Oak R
idge National Laboratory and Ford Motor Co.
