4e-8136-ae5f0160e974\n\n Decarbonization is one of the biggest challenges
faced by aviation\, and the pathway to net-zero emissions will take innov
ation\, collaboration\, and legislation. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) h
as a key role to play but requires bold action from airlines\, fuel provid
ers\, and policymakers in order to reach the necessary scale. One challeng
e the industry faces is finding more ways to make SAF at commercial scale
using different feedstocks and processes. Shell has collaborated with indu
stry partners in a breakthrough technology from Shell Aviation that shows
the feasibility of an innovative\, lower-carbon pathway for making SAF. In
May 2020 Shell accepted a BHAG challenge (Big Hairy Audacious Goal)\, fro
m the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management to produce an amount
of sustainable synthetic kerosene beyond laboratory scale at the Energy T
ransition Centre Amsterdam. What started with an innovative industry chall
enge\, ended with the world's first flight using certified\, synthetic ker
osene made from hydrogen and recycled carbon. Thus\, it was an important f
irst step and together with our partners we now need to scale up\, acceler
ate and make it commercially viable.\n\n Speaker bio\n\n Marwa is curren
tly the GM of Long Range Research and Experimentation at Shell. During the
  last 23+ years\, she held positions in project/construction management\,
university lecturing\, HSSE and technology development & commercialization
. Her work experience spans over many countries such as Egypt\, the UK\, t
he Netherlands\, Qatar\, India and Australia. She has been the recipient o
f numerous awards and has publications and patents in the field of carbon
 management\, circularity\, innovative materials\, waste treatment/conversi
on\, and construction management. Marwa is a civil/environmental engineer
with a PhD in Engineering from Cambridge University and MSc in Environment
al Science from Strathclyde University. She also holds a BSc and an MSc in
Construction Engineering from the American University in Cairo. She suppo
rted different Energy businesses such as GTL\, Coal Seam Gas Upstream\, Co
nventional gas\, petrochemicals development\, new energies and LNG. Marwa'
s areas of expertise: sustainability& circularity\, decarbonization (carbo
n accounting\, management\, policy and advocacy) and technology commercial
 ization.
