EPS Seminar: Dr. Michelle Muth "Experimental insights into the behavior of sulfur within Earth’s mantle".

This event is over.

Event Details:

Abstract/ Bio:

The transport of sulfur in Earth’s mantle and crust is crucial to volcanic hazard monitoring, the redox evolution of Earth’s mantle and atmosphere, and the creation of ore deposits. In these settings, magmatic sulfur is very dynamic and strongly dependent on magma redox state. In this talk, I present a series of experiments that characterize the behavior of sulfur at mantle pressures as a function of magma redox state. I will show how considering magma redox can shift current interpretations of sulfur behavior in Earth’s mantle. Finally, I will broadly discuss how this interpretational shift affects the large-scale processes described above.
