DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this (Hybrid) Winter Seminar with Speaker: A
nna Trugman. Ph.D\n\nTitle: “Plant Physiology\, Forest Ecology\, and Car
bon Cycle Uncertainty in a Changing Climate”\n\nAbstract: Climate change
has the potential to massively disrupt terrestrial ecosystem productivity
\, impacting biodiversity and ecosystem services\, and driving Earth’s f
orests to release carbon into the atmosphere\, which would further exacerb
ate climate change. Critically\, the physiological mechanisms underpinning
forest responses to climate are not fully understood due to complex inter
actions between climate\, tree physiology\, and community ecology. Here\,
I leverage plant physiological observations\, large observational database
s\, and trait-based ecosystem models to understanding the physiological an
d ecological unknowns underlying observed patterns of disturbance and drou
ght-driven mortality\, which can have major carbon cycle consequences. I t
hen highlight strengths and limitations in each approach and process uncer
tainties exposed by this hierarchy of techniques.\n\nBIO: Dr. Anna Trugman
is an ecologist with a multidisciplinary background in the earth sciences
. Her research interests are centered around understanding the Earth syste
m consequences of plant physiological processes and ecological interaction
s\, particularly in water limited systems and novel climate conditions exp
ected with anthropogenic climate change. Anna received her bachelor’s de
gree from Stanford University in Geological and Environmental Sciences\, h
er Ph.D. from Princeton University in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences\, a
nd spent two years at the University of Utah in the Biology Department. Sh
e has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at UC San
ta Barbara since 2019.\n\nA special thanks to Professor Alex Konings for b
ringing this speaker to us for this seminar. Also\, thanks to Professor Mo
rgan O’Neill & Professor Jamie Jones for co-instructing and running this
Seminar Series this Winter by bringing you experts in the fields as we le
arn from them.\n\nFor Zoom Info: \n\nhttps://stanford.zoom.us/j/9880238837
