DESCRIPTION:Hands-On Learning to Make Theory Reality\n\nFacilitated by Ken
Hara (Assistant Professor\, Aeronautics and Astronautics) and Sonia Trava
glini (Skilling & Learning Specialist\, Aeronautics and Astronautics)\n\nI
t is common for students to be asked to demonstrate their understanding of
theoretical concepts by applying them to idealized situations in problem-
sets or papers. AA100: Introduction to Aeronautics and Astronautics—a co
urse that covers the basics of aeronautics and astronautics—used to be n
o different. In this session\, we describe how\, based on student feedback
over several years\, we redesigned the course around an aircraft project.
The hands-on project gives students an opportunity to learn through "tria
l and error" in a real-world setting how fundamental theory infuses engine
ering design processes. \n\nJoin us to discuss how you might incorporate r
eal-world contexts into your own course activities and assignments to help
your students engage and learn better.
