Title: Experimental studies of planetary interiors: from Earth to exoplanets

In this talk we will introduce the Extreme Environments Laboratory at Stanford and showcase some of the research our group is undertaking to understand planetary interiors from the Earth and other terrestrial planets to ice giants to exoplanets. Recent advances in experimental capabilities for reaching high pressures and temperatures coupled with in situ characterization tools make this an exciting time for mineral physics studies of planetary deep interiors. We will take a planetary tour from a high-pressure mineral physics perspective – starting in the Earth from the crust to the inner core, and then beyond. We will present recent studies on shock compressed silicates to visualize phase transformations at the atomic level and how measurements of iron at extreme conditions can help us understand the dynamics and evolution of the core.

Please join us in person in Mitchell 350/372 or on Zoom for the Geophysics Winter Seminar Series 2022
